6 Things You Can Do That Will Help You Finally “Get It” On Your Sober Journey
Are you finding it really hard to remove alcohol from your life? If you’ve been stuck thinking “Why can’t I just get this?” you are not alone. So many women feel this way. I like to say that it’s like you’ve been trying to fix something with tools that weren’t made for the job. Can you imagine trying to cut down a tree with a hammer? Or how about stopping a leak under the sink with a saw?
If the only tools you’ve been relying on to remove alcohol from your life are sheer willpower and white knuckling through your days, it shouldn’t be a surprise that you are not feeling good about living an alcohol-free life. Willpower is a finite resource and at some point it runs out.
Listen to this episode of Feel Good Alcohol-Free for more on Why Willpower Isn’t Enough.
This is why it’s so important to learn new techniques that help you craft a life you love without alcohol. Every day I walk women through these new techniques as they evolve their thinking from “trying not to drink” to building a completely new way of living — one where you don’t even think about alcohol.
Here are 6 things I wish I knew when I started my journey to quit drinking alcohol.
6 Things You Can Do That Will Help You Finally “Get It” On Your Sober Journey
1. Identity Work: This is the foundation. You’re not here to just remove alcohol, you’re becoming a new version of yourself. That shift takes time, intention, and practice. Who are you when alcohol isn’t calling the shots? That’s the question we need to answer.
2. Nervous System Regulation: When your body feels safe, you don’t need alcohol to escape. This is the invisible work that changes everything. You learn to respond instead of react, and that’s when the cravings start to lose their edge.
3. Daily Calm: It’s not about perfect routines, it’s about consistent micro-moments where you slow down, breathe, and meet yourself with care. These small acts create stability.
4. Pattern Awareness: The goal isn’t to never slip, it’s to understand your patterns so you can stop living on autopilot. This is where journaling, voice notes, and real-time reflection become game-changers.
5. Self-Leadership: You don’t need more willpower, you need a relationship with yourself that feels solid. The kind where you have your own back, even on the hard days. This is what creates trust and long-term change.
6. Community & Coaching Transformation doesn’t happen in isolation. You need mirrors, perspective, and people who get it. Coaching gives you the tools and support. Community reminds you you’re not alone. You’re doing something brave. And it gets easier the more you align with this kind of work. When you stop hustling for the “right” way and start reconnecting with your way, that’s when everything starts to fall into place.
I introduce this framework in Episode 18 of my podcast, Feel Good Alcohol-Free, which you can access right here.
